Cruz del Eje is the largest city in the northern part of the province Cordoba in Argentina. It is known for the reservoir of the same name - the largest in the province of Córdoba - and the cultivation of olives, which it owes to the hot, sunny climate.

Cruz del Eje is located in a wide valley at the northern end of the Sierras de Cordoba in a slightly hilly landscape, the real attractions are a bit out of the way. In addition to the reservoir, this includes the eco-village San Marcos Sierras and the huge salt pan the Salinas Grandes.

background

In 1735 the Spaniard Francisco de Baigorria took possession of the area and drove out the Comechingones Indians who lived there. From this point on, the place developed spontaneously into a bridgehead between Córdoba and the nearby one La Rioja.

Today the city is one of the poorest in the region, although olive cultivation continues to flourish.

getting there

By train

The narrow-gauge line Cordoba - La Rioja (Tren de las Sierras) will be reactivated until Cruz del Eje, but so far (2015) it is only until Cosquín Approved. A short-term completion is not expected. Rail enthusiasts can still take the scenic but slow train and then change to a bus from Cosquín.

In the street

From Córdoba and La Rioja, Cruz del Eje can be reached on the Ruta Nacional 38.

By bus

The bus station is located at José Hernández 72, about 500 m from the center.

Buses run from Córdoba to the city at frequent intervals. Bus companies are Sarmiento, which also offers a faster and slightly more expensive direct bus, and Ciudad de Cordoba via two variants (via Villa Carlos Paz or over Déan Funes, the latter is recommended in the holiday season, as the traffic in the tourist regions near Carlos Paz and Cosquín often jams).

mobility

There are local buses (14 times a day connection to San Marcos Sierras) and taxis.
