Dili - Díli

Map of Dili.

Dili is the capital of East Timor. The city is located on the north coast of the country, squeezed by the narrow plains between the central mountains that cross Timor and the Ombai Strait. This coastal city suddenly found itself assuming the role of national capital when Timor-Leste became an independent country in May 2002. Dili is also the capital of a district with the same name. The district includes the surrounding areas as well as the island of Ataúro.

Understand

Dili was the classic backwater during colonial times, being the main city of a remote colony in a remote part of the world. However, this heritage has left Dili with a distinct Portuguese flavor and, together with Macau, it is probably the farthest east, where you can taste real Portuguese food and architecture. Dili has already remarkably recovered, although you can still see many buildings destroyed.

Dili is a kind of colonial nucleus, with its seafront and a square bordered on the south by impressive government buildings. The commercial areas of Lecidere are to the east, Colmera is to the west and the old Municipal Market is to the south.
