From Wadi Bani Awf to Al Hamra is an itinerary that develops through theNorthern Oman.

Introduction

This is probably the most scenic route of the Hajar mountains and a long drive that takes at least 4 hours in 4WD. It can also be covered with a normal car but only for the first part where the asphalted road is very easy.

It is equally spectacular to complete this itinerary in reverse.

Preparations

As the itinerary passes through some remote areas, it is highly recommended that you bring a spare tire, a petrol can and a jack, warm clothing, and extra food and water.

Wadi Bani Awf

Roadside Ophiolite

From route 13, take the signposted road to Wadi Bani Awf. You will pass in front of a 1 hotel before reaching a 20 m high rock face which is part of the 2 Wadi Bani Awf, with several good climbing routes. Along the panoramic road along the wadi the landscape is alternated by vertical rocks of the mountains as well as by gardens with palm groves that alternate with the absence of vegetation. Near the end of the asphalted road we find along the edges of the 3 ophiolitic rocks green in color with glistening reflections in the sun. These rocks appear as flaky layers that are very interesting from a geological point of view.

Little Snake Canyon

A short distance from the ophiolithic rocks is the village of 4 At Tikhah where the asphalted road ends. Go straight for another 3 km then turn left at 5 crossroads. After another 3 km you will reach the entrance to the 6 Little Snake Canyon on the right, with the presence of water all year round in the upper part.

Snake Canyon

After the village of Zammah, the road begins a steep climb. The entrance to the incredible 7 Snake Canyon (Snake Gorge), which requires 3-4 hours of hiking and climbing, will be on your left. If you are planning to go on an excursion to this place, it is best to park your car right under the entrance to the village.

Towards Al Hamra

Although the area is very exposed, there are many decent places to camp, at this point the road is paved again and descends for 25km to the town of 11 Al Hamra.
