Northern Oman Governorate of Muscat - This governorate includes the vast extension of the capital and some smaller centers that are part of it.
Musandam Governorate - Thin and indented peninsula that extends north towards the coast of Iran to form the Strait of Ormuz. It constitutes an "exclave" of Oman, entirely surrounded by the territory of the United Arab Emirates. It is one of the major tourist destinations in the country.
Al-Buraymi governorate - Administrative region created in 2006.
Governorate of al-Zahira (or In Dhahirah) - Region bordering the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia
Al-Dakhiliyya governorate - The inner region west of the capital. Its major tourist center is the city of Nizwa, among the oldest in Oman and at the crossroads of old caravan roads. Nizwa, about 140 km from Muscat, lies at the foot of the Hajar mountains, among extensive palm groves that produce exquisite dates. Still 40 km from Nizwa is the Castle of Bahla, probably from the pre-Islamic era and included in the World Heritage List.
Al-Batina region - The maritime region north-west of the capital. On its long coastline there are many seaside resorts. It is the most visited region being crossed by bus lines that commute between Dubai is Muscat

- Al Hamra - Located right at the base of the mountains, this city is famous for a number of Yemeni-style mud brick buildings, some of which are among the oldest houses in Oman. They are located in an older part of the city and overlook the newer city; in recent years many of the older houses have been abandoned as the inhabitants have chosen to move to more modern buildings.

Ḥajar Mountains - Magnificent mountain range of considerable interest are the scattered fortresses in the mountain area and the sites UNESCO of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn.

The Muscat Express is a highway that connects the capital with the coastal border of the Emirates. While the R21 expressway starts from Nizwa to reach Al Ain in the Emirates.

There are buses with more departures per day from Dubai in Muscat.

What see
1 Aflaj irrigation systems. It is a heritage UNESCO composed of five ancient irrigation systems. They are located in the regions of al-Sharqiyya is al-Batina.
2 Archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khutm is Al-Ayn. They are world heritage ofUNESCO, defined by UNESCO as "the most complete collection of settlements and necropolis of the third millennium BC in the world".

What to do
The north of the country offers plenty of opportunities to explore natural places, come on Hajar Mountains with its countless peaks (jebel) up to the hiking trails inside the wadi (natural canyons). Each governorate has several options.
