Dambach-la-Ville is a french City in the department Bas-Rhin in the Alsace.
background
Politically, the municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Sélestat and the canton of Barr.
In the 11th century the settlement received city rights. In the 14th century it even became a fortified bishopric.
The town has already received several awards in the competition for its floral decorations Villes et Villages Fleuris.
With 470 hectares, the largest vineyard in Alsace is located here.

The medieval city wall is still almost intact. Three city gates from the 14th century have also been preserved. The old town with its many oriel houses is worth seeing as a whole. The Renaissance town hall and the fountain with the bear with the wine goblet, the symbol of the city, are located on the market square.
The is in the middle of the vineyard on a small hill Saint Sebastian Chapel. The tower is built in the Romanesque style, the choir and the ossuary in the Gothic style. The richly decorated high altar, consecrated to St. Sebastian, is worth seeing. The 15th century statue of Our Lady is attributed to the Tilman School. It is located in the left side altar. In the ossuary are the skeletons of the rebellious farmers who were killed in the battle for Scherwiller in 1525 under Duke Anton.

From the Saint-Sebastian chapel, an approx. 45-minute walk leads to the ruins of the Amber Castle, which is 562 meters above sea level. From the 18-meter-high keep of the newly renovated ruin you have a beautiful view of the Rhine plain and the foothills of the Vosges.
