In the border area with Colombia in particular, gangs with a partly political and partly criminal background operate, often from Colombia. Due to the inadequate infrastructure, the Panamanian security authorities can hardly get the security situation under control. We strongly advise against traveling to the eastern part of the province and the border area with Colombia (Travel advice from the Federal Foreign Office as of April 2019).
