Background

Dartmouth was recognized as a town in 1873. In 1955 the town was permanently connected with Halifax with the Bridge Angus L. Macdonald which led to rapid economic development. Dartmouth then merged with neighboring towns and became a city in 1961. The A. Murray MacKay Bridge opened in 1970.

Dartmouth is connected to the rest of the Canada from provincial freeways 101, 102, 103, 104, 107 and 118.
