Length 7864 kilometers

The Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) is the third longest road link in the world and leads from Victoria in British Columbia until after St. John's in Newfoundland. This west-east connection Canada crosses ten provinces over a length of approx. 7800 kilometers. The highway is partially divided into north and south axes.

background

Start of the TCH in Victoria

The Transcanada Highway was opened in 1962 and completed in 1970. The expansion in the following years led to today's, largely four-lane and intersection-free appearance. Interestingly, there is no consistent mileage count so there is a 1 mile at either end. In St. John's, for example, there is the Mile One Center entertainment center and in Victoria there is a memorial with the inscription MILE 0. The highway was filmed in the Canadian road movie, among other things One week set a monument.

getting there

Here we go

From Victoria to Calgary

Of Victoria on Vancouver Island it goes in the direction Nanaimo and then on to the ferry. During the crossing you can sometimes see whales.

After the ferry crossing you can either take a detour to Whistler or continue following the now 4-lane highway Vancouver consequences. The best way to get to the city center is over the Lions Gate Bridge, otherwise the road goes around Vancouver via the outskirts.

After Vancouver there is a long 4- to 6-lane on a highway-like road Kamloops. Behind it the road becomes much more curvy and often only 2 lanes.

In the Canadian Rockies there are probably most of the sights for nature lovers. On the way there are numerous waterfalls and lakes where you can stop. Wild animals such as bears can also be seen quite often, so parts of the highway are fenced off.

At Lake Louise you can go to the very worthwhile ones Icefields Parkway in the direction Jasper National Park turn off, from here the 4-lane highway itself runs through the Banff National Park further to the village of the same name Banff and then through the mountains further to Calgary.
