The island Newfoundland (engl. Newfoundland, French Terre Neuve) is part of the Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador and is located in the North Atlantic. The Cape Spear located here is the most easterly point on the American continent. This applies to Newfoundland Newfoundland Standard Time - CET - 4 ½ hours.

Other goals
The Gros-Morne and Terra-Nova national parks are on Newfoundland. The Gros-Morne National Park was founded in 1973 and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another world heritage site is located in the far north of the Western Region: L'Anse-aux-Meadows, where Vikings founded the first European settlement 1000 years ago. Since July 2016, the fossil finds in the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve on the east coast of the Avalon Peninsula have also been a World Heritage Site. In addition to these national parks, there are numerous other smaller nature parks administered by the province (provincial parks).
The Port-au-Port Peninsula in the western region west of Stephenville offers a magnificent coastal landscape and residents who have spoken a special French dialect for 400 years.
Everywhere along the north and east coast you can watch whales - also from land - and see icebergs well into spring.

Basque fishermen are said to have fished on the "Grand Banks" in the summer even before Columbus discovered America. After the first settlement by Europeans in 1610, there were repeated clashes with the local Beothuk, which the government only half-heartedly stopped. The genocide ended on June 6th, 1829 with the death of the last Beothuk Shanawdithit.
language
The official language is English. In the 400 years since settlement began, the language has been shaped by emigrants from western England and southern Ireland. Words and grammar from French have also found their way into today's language. An ancient-sounding French is spoken on the Port-au-Port peninsula in the west.
getting there
By plane
There are two international airports and three regional airports on Newfoundland. The international airports are in St. John's and Gander. In Deer Lake, Stephenville, and St. Anthony are regional airports.
By boat
Since Newfoundland is an island, any journey that is not made by plane is via ferry from the mainland. The crossing takes place with Marine Atlantic of North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Channel-Port-aux-Basques. A car ferry runs three times a week from North Sydney to mid-June to mid-September Argentia.
Ferries also run from the provincial part of Labrador - all year round Labrador Marine from Blanc Sablon, Quebec (only a few kilometers from the provincial border of Labrador) to St. Barbe, and if ice drifts in winter makes the passage to St. Barbe impossible, to Corner Brook.
One runs from February 2020 to December 2020 Passenger ferry of Fortune to Saint Pierre and Miquelon, the small French overseas territory about 20 km south of the island.
mobility
There is a long-distance bus line and in the larger cities there is little public transport in the form of minibuses and taxis. However, if you want to explore the island more closely, you have to have your own (rental) car.
The long-distance bus company DLR-RL runs daily from St. John's to Channel-Port-aux-Basque in both directions and stops at 25 stations. The journey time is approx. 13 ½ hours. The trip costs CAD 124.00, for students and seniors CAD 111.00.
Well-developed asphalt roads lead to all interesting destinations. The Trans-Canada Highway (TCH # 1) runs 900 km from Channel-Port-aux-Basque through Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander to St. John's. It is more than 700 km from Channel-Port-aux-Basque to L'Anse-aux-Meadows.
There are tens of thousands of moose in Newfoundland. These large animals are a considerable danger to road traffic, especially at dusk, but also during the day. Collisions can have catastrophic consequences for humans and animals.
The former railway line (T'Railway) from Channel-Port-aux-Basque to St. John's has been upgraded to a gravel bike path. It is also used by squads. The total distance is 883 km.

- 1 Gros Morne National Park (Gros Morne National Park).Gros Morne National Park is on the west coast of Newfoundland. With its 1805 km², the park, founded in 1973, is one of the larger Canadian national parks in the east of the country. The park was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 because of its geological history, among other things. In the park are the Pissing Mare Fallswith a height of fall of 350 m in the Western Brook Pond plunge and are the highest waterfalls in the east of the North American continent.

- 3 L'Anse-aux-Meadows.The L’Anse aux Meadows settlement is the only known Scandinavian settlement in North America. It consisted of about a dozen houses and a forge and only existed for a few years around the year 1000.
