St. John's is the capital of Canadian province Newfoundland and Labrador on the island of Newfoundland and one of the oldest cities North America. It is located in a well-protected natural harbor on the east coast on the Avalon Peninsula. The begins (or ends) in St. John's Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) No 1.

background

According to legend, the name of the settlement goes back to the Italian Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), who is said to have rediscovered the protected natural harbor on June 24, 1497 (first after the Vikings) and is said to have named it after John the Baptist. In fact, Cabot landed in Bonavista that day. It is more likely that the name was used for the entire east coast. The name for the natural harbor appeared on a Portuguese map in 1519 as Rio de San Johem on. In 1578 the name St. John's was first used for the port.
