Death Valley lies in California and is a national park.

Info

Death Valley is located in the northern portion of the Mojave Desert, which stretches from Nevada to California. Death Valley is one of the largest national monuments in the United States.

History

Death Valley was initially given the name Tomesha by the Paniment Indians, which means "burning ground". In 1849, a group of prospectors, the Bennetts and the Arcanes, took what they believed to be a shorter route to the goldfields in California. However, they ended up in the hottest and driest valley in all of North America. When their water ration ran out, some died. After roaming the rugged landscape for 80 days, the remaining pioneers were rescued. Legend has it that one of them said, "Goodbye, Death Valley" at the rescue. This is how the area got its name.

Initially, Death Valley was a sea. But because of the enormous heat, all the water has evaporated. The sea salt is left behind and is spread all over the area. Death Valley is about 86 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point in the United States. Also characteristic of Death Valley are the colored rocks. These colors are caused by different types of metal ores in the rocks that rust. A mountain with copper in it turns green and a mountain with iron turns reddish brown.
