Güzelyurt district (Güzelyurt İlçesi), is one of the districts of Northern Cyprus. Its sub-districts are Güzelyurt and Lefke.

To know

Güzelyurt means "beautiful country" in Turkish. The region of the Güzelyurt district is very fertile, with numerous underground springs.

Geographical notes

The district is composed of the region around the southeast of the great Omorfo Bay in the northwest of the island of Cyprus, and the exclave Erenköy which is part of Gemikonagi.

It borders on the mainland to the north with the Girne District (Girne İlçesi), to the east with the Nicosia District (Lefkoşa İlçesi), to the south with the Southern Nicosia DistrictBorders the sea to the north with the Girne District (Girne İlçesi), to the west with the Southern Nicosia District and the Paphos district.

Background

The district of Güzelyurt was established on 10 June 1998, through separation from the district of Nicosia (Lefkoşa İlçesi).

Spoken languages

The tongue Turkish with an accentuated Cypriot dialect, a minority also speak the language Greek. Even the use of the English it is quite common in the most touristic centers.

How to get

By car

From the southern part of the island the best way to get there is through customs from Astromeritis to Omorph. Please note: this passage is only open between 07:00 and 21:00.

By bus

The regular service is operated by minibuses (dolmuş) from Nicosia is Girne also known as Kirenia and Kyrenia.

How to get around

By car

As there is no regular bus service, the easiest way to get around is to rent a car.

By bus

There are no regular buses in the district, as there are no large cities. The towns and villages are served by minibuses (dolmuş).
