The Doubtful sound is part of the Fiordland National Park in New Zealand and is very popular because of its remoteness. The best way to experience and explore the fjord and its solitude is by kayak.
background
The Doubtful Sound of James Cookwho at the time apparently found it too "doubtful" to sail the fjord. Because of the huge amounts of precipitation, the fjord is covered with a layer of fresh water several meters thick. This gives the underwater world a special flora and fauna, see diving in Milford Sound.
What you have to reckon with in any case are hosts of sand flies. These little beasts can truly drive you crazy if you let yourself. Nevertheless, you shouldn't do without the sound. There are good insect repellants that provide reliable protection against pests.
getting there

In the street
The journey takes the minibus to Lake Manapouri (Pearl Harbor), there it goes by boat over Lake Manapouri past the hydroelectric power station and then again with the minibus or in the coach, over the Wilmot Pass to the fjord.
