Djibouti (Arabic:جيبوتي) Is the international notation Djibouti, is the main and only real major city in the country of the same name Djibouti on the Gulf of Aden. It was founded in a previously uninhabited area as a port and administrative seat (from 1896) by the French colonial administration in 1888. The construction of the meter-gauge railway to Ethiopia brought an upswing. Ninety percent of Ethiopian imports by sea still go through the port today. A good seventy percent of the country's population live here.

The city consists of two parts: the actual Djibouti in the east and 1 Balbala (بلبالا), A settlement located a little away from the sea behind the harbor, which is divided into further districts: Hayableh, Cité Barwaqo, Cité Cheik Osman, PK 12. Between the two parts is the river bed of the Ambouli, which only carries water at times. On its banks lies the former dockworkers' settlement of Arhiba, which has degenerated into a slum and is mainly ethnic Afar is inhabited. In the 1990s there was massive immigration of Somalis and Ethiopians.
The real center ("European Quarter") are the districts Republique and Plateau (du serpent), here the roughly right-angled main streets also have names. It is in the middle 1 Place du 27 June 1977 (formerly Place Ménélik). In the north is the Îlot du Héron rich district.
The port area is only accessible to a limited extent, the presidential palace not at all.

Djibouti is a safe country by African standards. Warnings are only given against casual and pickpockets in bazaars.
health
The maximum daily temperatures regularly exceed 35-40 ° C from May to October, and almost always 30 ° C for the rest of the year. There is therefore a permanent risk of heat stroke and dehydration. However, the lower heat is often just as difficult to bear in the winter months because of the significantly higher humidity.
