Dubai is one of seven emirates in the country United Arab Emirates, which in everyday speech is called the UAE after its English abbreviation. The city of Dubai is located along the coast of the Persian Gulf and borders the emirate Abu Dhabi in the south as well as the emirate Sharjah in the north. With approximately 1.6 million inhabitants (2008), Dubai is the largest emirate in the UAE in terms of population, but only the second largest in terms of area after Abu Dhabi.

History

The Emirate of Dubai was founded in 1833 when the Al Maktoum family with 800 companions settled on the west side of the Gulf of Dubai (Khor Dubai) at the fishing village of Bur Dubai. The emirate was then part of the British protectorate of the Contracting States until the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971.
