background

Map of Dunqulā

The city on the west bank of the Nile is also known as New Dongola to separate it from Old Dongola, the capital of the medieval Christian state of Makuria. The latter was about 80 kilometers up the Nile. New Dongola was founded around 1812 by Mameluks who fled Egypt from persecution. Near the city, on the eastern bank of the Nile, are the ancient sites of al-Kawa.

climate

Dongola lies in a zone with a dry desert climate (arid to hyperarid) with maximum daily temperatures of over 30 ° C from March to November. Record values of almost 50 ° C can be reached in June and July. The total amount of precipitation is low with an annual average of 12.7 mm. The humidity is between 17% in summer and 35% in December and January. Despite this low rainfall and high temperatures, agriculture is possible through the Nile.

Both streets are connected by a bridge over the Nile. The A leads to the south Khartoum along the western bank of the Nile. Both roads are paved throughout.

By boat

Although the Nile is basically navigable here, there is no longer any passenger traffic on the river. There is only one ferry here to get to the east bank.
