Duppigheim is a French commune located in the Bas-Rhin in Alsace. It counts approximately 1,600 inhabitants. The azure blue color of its coat of arms recalls the chasuble of Saint Arbogast and the golden nails represent the golden attributes of the bishop, miter and crook.
Understand
The Duppigheim site has probably been occupied for a very long time. Indeed, the name of the town is mentioned on a map, exhibited at the Prehistoric Museum of Strasbourg, listing the tumuli in Alsace. Duppigheim is mentioned for the first time in 951, the brothers Wizerich and Asso donating some of their real estate to the church of Strasbourg. The church of Saint-Thomas de Strasbourg also has property there, cited in 1163, as does the abbey of Murbach, mentioned in 1211. The village is then given as a fief to the langrave of lower Alsace, which installs the lords of Hohenstein and Landsberg. Undergoing the Bishops 'War, the Thirty Years' War and the Battle of Entzheim like others, Duppigheim was completely destroyed three times during this period. From 1715, the lands of Dupigheim passed into the hands of the Flachlanden who kept them until the Revolution. In the 19th century, activities were still mainly agricultural. The inhabitants also practice many handicrafts at home, such as weaving hemp. The town is home to sugar and potato factories, starch, mustard, starch and tiles, activities that have now disappeared.

- Saint Arbogast Church – The church retains a bell tower-porch, the base of which could date from the Romanesque period, ie from the 12th century. A project for the reconstruction of the parish church was established in 1763 by Jean-Michel Rüscher, but was not retained. The works are carried out according to the plans of the architect Christiani. The nave is dated 1765. It is enlarged towards the east in 1846, the choir being rebuilt according to a project by Ch. Morin which respects the style of the 18th century. The building, dedicated to Saint Arbogast, bishop of Strasbourg from the middle of the 6th century, suffered a fire in 1885. The painting of Saint Arbogast was redone, and the pulpit, the organ and the Stations of the Cross were restored.
- Synagogue – The establishment of the Jewish community in Duppigheim is old. In 1876, the latter acquired a synagogue with 54 seats for men and 46 for women. The sanctuary has since been abandoned, converted into a fire station, but retains bay windows with horseshoe arches resembling Muslim architecture.
- The Jean Bugatti stele – A stele in memory of Jean Bugatti is located at the entrance of the village. Jean Bugatti was the son of Ettore Bugatti, founder of the famous brand. He died in Duppigheim, on driving a Bugatti, trying to avoid a cyclist.
- The Old Mill – Doubt hangs over this mill, the dating of which remains uncertain and whose very function as a mill is in dispute. The building is now far from any watercourse, but a drop in level of the land suggests the presence of the bed of an old watercourse, perhaps formerly diverted.
