Geographical notes
Dzūkija is located in the south of Lithuania. North of Dzūkija is the region ofAukštaitija, while the Sudovia (Sūduva or Suvalkija in Lithuanian) rises to the west. Large parts of Dzūkija are covered with forests and in the sparsely populated areas, the population density is less than 4 people per km². This is where the main swampy area of Lithuania is located, the Čepkelių swamp.
Culture and traditions
Due to its characteristics of a remote region, full of forests and swamps, the growth of wild mushrooms and berries; the collection of these products has been a tradition of the Dzūkija people for centuries, and continues today. In summer and autumn, there are many locals who sell mushrooms and other products in the markets or on the main streets.
In Lithuania, the following saying exists: "Jei ne grybai ir ne uogos, dzūkų mergos būtų nuogos"(" If it weren't for mushrooms and berries, the Dzūkija girls would go around naked ").

Two of Lithuania's five national parks are located in Dzūkija:
- Dzūkija Natural Park - East of Varėna, founded in 1991.
- Trakai Historical National Park - At the city of Trakai, established in 1992.
