Eger (German Erlau), a city in Hungary based in the county Heves, North-east of Budapest located.

background

history

Numerous traces have been discovered around the city of Eger, which date back to the Stone Age around 7500 years ago and prove that the area was already populated by Teutons, Slavs and Avars back then. It was not until the 10th century AD that the Magyars began to settle around Eger. Various theories have grown up around the name of the city, for example the name of the city was derived from the deciduous tree alder. Alder trees (Latin: Alnus) still grow in the vicinity of Eger; they are called Éger trees in Hungarian.

The city is in that Eger small area.

The times from AD 1000

The first king of Hungary, Saint Stephen I (* 969, † 1038) had the Christianization of non-Christians, unbaptized Magyars introduced around the year 1000, so he also ordered a church in the city of Eger, which is worthy of note one of the oldest cities in Hungary to build. The city has now been chosen to be the bishopric. Eger grew both economically and culturally and played an important role in Hungary, especially with regard to religion. Unfortunately, the church that was once built no longer exists today, only the remaining floor plans have been scientifically proven.

Around 1200

Eger, like all of Hungary, experienced devastating devastation from Tatar attacks around 1241. The city was destroyed and most of the residents were killed. Béla IV (* 1206 † 1270), King of Hungary, was granted the right to build a fortification in Eger around 1248. This led to more security, and so the city and the surrounding area continued to grow until the 15th century.

Around 1500

The impending attacks by the Ottoman armies weren't just the city's only worries. From 1490 to 1526 Hungary was split between two kingdoms: by Bohemia and by the Polish-Lithuanian Jagiellonians. Eger therefore constantly changed hands. This situation brought little joy among the population of the city.

The year 1552 and 1596

Historically of enormous importance both for the city of Eger and for Hungary itself. The two united armies, various sources report that 60,000 to 80,000 Ottoman soldiers were attacked the castle of Eger in 1552. The number of defenders including the population who actually only sought protection in the castle was around 2,100. After weeks of fighting and great losses by the Ottomans, the attackers finally gave up their plans and withdrew. After the battle, the castle was repaired, but they no longer defended Hungarian soldiers but mercenaries from several countries who finally gave up the castle in 1596. From this time onwards the castle was ruled by the Ottoman conquerors for over 90 years, but it was not until 1687 that the Austrian armies of the Habsburgs succeeded in pushing back the castle's occupiers.

18th century until today

The city not only experienced better times, it also suffered setbacks. Today, Eger is the focus of various cultural events and the area is famous for its wine products such as the red wine Erlauer Stierblut (Hungarian: Egri bikavér). The thermal baths are also definitely worth mentioning.

Landscape / climate

Eger is in the county Heves, around 139 kilometers northeast of Budapest. The area around Eger is rich in flora, especially because of the dry climate, making it ideal for growing grapes. The maximum temperatures in July / August are an average of 27 ° C, the minimum in January is at least -5 ° C.
