Egilsstaðir is a city ofAusturland, inIceland Oriental.

To know

The city is young, even by Icelandic standards where urbanization is a rather recent trend in relation toEurope continental.

Egilsstaðir takes its name from the homonymous farm located in the place where it was later decided to develop the urban center.

Today, Egilsstaðir has grown to become the largest city in eastern Iceland and is home to the region's main services, transport and administrative centers. The city has an airport, a university and a hospital.

Geographical notes

The city is located on the banks of the Lagarfljót River.


How to orient yourself

The city is located near the bridge over the Lagarfljót Riviera; a point where all the roads of the region meet: road no. 1 (Hringvegur) as well as the main routes to the eastern fjords.


How to get

By plane

There are several daily flights from Reykjavik. There is no wifi at the airport, but there is a small bar and a car rental company.

By car

Egilsstaðir is located exactly on the Ring Road (# 1).

Major international car rental companies (e.g. Hertz) have an office inside the airport, open every day.

On boat

You can take a ferry from Hirtshals (Denmark) passing from Faroe Islands until Seyðisfjörður.

By bus

There are many buses that arrive from every day Seyðisfjörður. They leave from the docking point of the ferry arriving from Denmark. For more information on timetables it is necessary to check thetimetable on the internet.

Buses from all major Icelandic cities arrive here in the summer.
