Regions
Ecuador is divided into 24 provinces (provincias) - administrative units of the first order. Provinces are divided into 217 cantons, and these in turn into 1024 parishes (parroquias) to distinguish them from church parishes, also known as civil parishes (parroquias civiles).
Cities
According to official data from 2010, Ecuador had over 80 cities with a population exceeding 6.5 thousand. residents. The urban population constitutes 55% of the total population of Ecuador, a significant part of which lives in the two main cities of over a million. The country's capital, Quito, is in second place and, together with Guayaquil, it had over a million inhabitants; 13 cities with a population of 100,000 ÷ 500,000; 8 cities with a population of 50,000 ÷ 100,000; 26 cities with a population of 25,000 ÷ 50,000 and the rest of the cities below 25,000 residents.
