The town Elgin lies on the river Lossie in Scotland. It is the administrative seat of the Council Area Moray. The city is located around 10 km from the coast.

In a battle near Elgin on August 14, 1040 Macbeth (Mac Bethad mac Findlàich, * 1005; † August 15, 1057) killed the Scottish King Duncan I and became King of Scotland himself. David I raised Elgin to the Royal Burgh. 1224 was at the instigation of Pope Honorius III. a cathedral was built and Elgin became the cathedral city. The cathedral was The Lantern of the North (Light of the North) and destroyed during the Reformation. The ruin is still present in the city today. In 1196 Edward I. Elgin Castle to his base. Remains are still on the today Lady Hill to see there was a monument to 1839 George V., the last Duke of Gordon, built. Elgin is on Scotland's Malt Whiskey Trail.
