Enghien is a French-speaking city of Belgium with minority Dutch speakers located in Wallonia in the province of Hainaut.

Understand

Enghien is known in Belgium for its lace, its tapestry, including the famous verdures. Five pieces dating from the 15th century are exhibited in the tapestry museum, located in the Jonathas house, the most important Romanesque keep in Wallonia. Enghien is also its beer (since 1975 it has been made in Silly), the Double d'Enghien and today its Double cheese, its chocolates, etc.

  • St. Nicholas Church (On the main square) – This vast Gothic church houses a carillon of 51 bells. Inside, we discover the beautiful modern stained glass windows (1964) by Max Ingrand, whose large glass roof evokes the Apostleship. The chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Messine (formerly Saint-Éloi), the oldest part of the building, contains an admirable 16th century altarpiece of uncertain origins, illustrating scenes from the life of the Virgin.
  • Capuchin Church (Saint-François chapel)  – This 1616 building contains, in a chapel, a beautiful Renaissance mausoleum executed by the sculptor of Charles V, Jean Mone, for Guillaume de Croÿ (cardinal-bishop of Toledo).
  • Tapestry Museum  – This small museum reminds us that Enghien had important weaving workshops from the 15th to the 18th century.
