background

Already in the 6th BC. was lived here. At that time the city was still called Herakleia Pontike. 5 years later the city decided with the Pontic Kingdom Amasya to go to war against the Romans. After the battle of Zile it turned out that this was a rather poor choice. The Romans built a garrison here and the Byzantines and Ottomans, the usual rulers, followed. In the course of the First World War and the Turkish Liberation War, the city gained special importance due to the port and coal deposits and was occupied by French troops until 1920. Today Ereğli is known for its strawberries and steel production. Essentially, as an industrial city, this city is not one of the highlights on the Black Sea, but if you end up in this city, the eastern half of the city invites you to linger.
