Central Finland (Keski-Suomi or Mellersta Finland in Swedish) is a region of the Lakeland Finland.

Geographical notes

Despite the name, the Central Finland region is by no means the geographical center of Finland, but the center of the southern part of Finland.

Spoken languages

The dialects spoken in the region are now extinct, so much so that the inhabitants speak in a very similar way to the written language.

By plane

Like most other provinces, there is an airport in the main city, Jyväskylä, with flights to Helsinki.

By car

Many highways run through the province.

On the train

It is possible to get to Jyväskylä by train from Tampere and from some places in lakeside Finland.

By bus

There are many intercity bus connections in practically all directions.

What to do

  • Excursion in Salamajärvi National Park to Kivijärvi or along the Muuramenjoki trail in Muurame.
  • Continue along small dirt roads and look at the hilly lake landscape.
  • Watch the World Rally Championship (WRC) of Finland, held around Jyväskylä in July.
  • Buy licorice and chocolate at the Panda factory shop in Jyväskylä.
