background

The Fish River Canyon (Afrikaans: Visrivier Afgronde, German: Fish River Canyon) in the south of Namibia is one of the largest canyons in the world and one of the most important natural wonders of Namibia. Over a length of around 160 km, the Fish River, Namibia's longest river, has washed its way into the rocks up to 550 meters deep and up to 27 km wide.

The Fish River rises in the eastern Naukluft Mountains and flows after about 650 km in the Richtersveld into the Oranje River, the border river to South Africa. In its lower third (between Seeheim in the north and Ai-Ais in the south) it breaks through a rock massif and forms the Fish River Canyon. Almost the entire canyon is now protected by nature parks: In the south, the deepest point, by the state Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, in the north by private nature reserves such as the Canyon Nature Park or the Vogelstrausskluft.
