Fort Vermilion is a hamlet located in the North ofAlberta. In fact, it is one of the northernmost communities in the Rivière-de-la-Paix region. It is located on the south bank of the Peace River. On the opposite shore is North Vermilion Settlement.

Having been founded in 1788, Fort Vermilion shares the title of oldest European settlement in Alberta with Fort Chipewyan. Today, Fort Vermilion includes several modern services to serve its residents as well as those of the surrounding rural area. In fact, Fort Vermilion includes the administrative offices of Mackenzie County of which it is a part. Mackenzie County is the largest municipality in Alberta in terms of area.

  • Blues creek (at about 58 km southwest of Fort Vermilion) – Site of 800 acres suitable for hunting and hiking consisting of a habitat of the heights. There are elk, moose, deer, black bears, grouse as well as various small mammals and birds. Open fires are prohibited and permission from landowners is required before crossing private land in order to get there.
  • North La Crete Uplands (at about 30 km southwest of Fort Vermilion) – Site of 160 acres suitable for hunting and hiking consisting of highland and riparian habitat used as a wintering area by ungulate mammals. There are deer, moose, black bears, grouse as well as various small mammals and birds. Only use during the day is permitted and open fires are prohibited. It can be accessed on foot only.
  • Wilson prairie uplands (at about 40 km southwest of Fort Vermilion) – Site of 314 acres suitable for hunting and hiking consisting of highland and riparian habitat as well as wetlands. There are deer, moose, black bears, grouse, waterfowl and various small birds. Only use during the day is permitted and open fires are prohibited. It can be accessed on foot only.
