Southern fringes of Calcutta is a district of the city of Calcutta.

To know

The rapidly proliferating neighborhoods south of the city include Tollygunge, Behala, Joka, Pailan, Jadavpur, Garia, and Narendrapur. New areas are continually being developed and added to the city. Traditionally a part of the 24 Pargana South district is now part of the added areas of Calcutta. Calcutta is a city built in the British style, but the southern fringes were left by the British as practically a large semi-urban slum that quickly attracted millions of refugees from the Pakistan Oriental. The transformation into a modern city was spectacular, while still maintaining slums here and there, as a reminder of the harrowing days after the split. Most refugee colonies now look brighter.

On November 10, 1698, they transferred their rights over the three villages to the East India Company for a fixed period. The pillars of the rubble factory (land collection office) where Charles Eyre, son-in-law of Job Charnock of the East India Company, was awarded the right to collect the rent in the three villages still standing.
