background
history
The German place names of the places Freyming and Merlebach are Allowances or. Merlenbach. Like the entire Lorraine region, these places were also subject to the game of powers and changed their nationality several times in the course of history. In 1637, after the passage of a Swedish troop, just 80 people remained alive in Freyming. In the 17th century, the inhabitants of this region lived mainly from agriculture, in addition to the operation of modest glassworks. Shortly before the French Revolution, the region became part of France.
The discovery and mining of coal created new jobs, wood processing, mills and nail smiths settled there, and a modest level of prosperity developed. Even the Franco-German War of 1870/71 did little to change this at first. This only happened through the two world wars. After the end of World War II, mining experienced a boom. In the meantime, however, it has caused structural problems similar to those in the neighboring one Saarland. In 1971 both places became today's city Freyming-Merlebach merged.
