background

The fresh spit is located in northern Poland and western Russia. It is shaped by the Vistula glacial period through glaciers, wind and ocean currents. It represents a single dune almost 100 km long (of which approx. 60 km separate the lagoon from the open sea) with a pine forest, which is almost 50 meters high in the Kamelberg, making it Europe's highest solid dune. The Kamelberg is also the only point on the spit from which both the open sea and the lagoon can be seen. There are no significant tides and therefore no Wadden Sea. On the north side there is an approx. 100 km long sandy beach. The south side of the Frischen Haff is largely overgrown with reeds, but there are also sandy beaches. The fresh lagoon is very shallow and, thanks to the good wind conditions but low waves, is ideal for kitesurfing. All places and harbors of the spit are on the southern side of the lagoon.

The spit is very sparsely populated, and the beaches are accordingly romantic and lonely. The prices for board and lodging are lower here than at other sections of the Polish Baltic coast, especially the Hel Peninsula or Sopot.

The Polish-Russian border and thus the external EU border of the Schengen area runs across the spit. The border cannot be easily crossed. There is a border fence on the beach.

language

Polish is the official language in Poland and Russian is the national language in Russia. One gets along well with English in Poland. Menus and information boards are often also available in German.

Tourist Attractions

activities

The Hel peninsula is particularly ideal for sunbathing and water sports on the beach.

kitchen

Due to the proximity to the open sea but also to inland waters, marine and freshwater fish are the main components of the regional cuisine. Forest fruits, mushrooms and game supply the dense coastal forests of Kashubia.

nightlife

There is something going on almost everywhere in summer. In winter, on the other hand, even the regional capital Krynica Morska looks sleepy. If you are looking for nightlife, you will find yourself in the neighboring urban area of Gdańsk or after Elblag go.

security

The Baltic coast falls very flat in the fishing lagoon and to the north under water and there are hardly any tides, high waves or unpredictable currents. Bathing is therefore usually safe for families with children and swimming accidents are rare. When swimming accidents do occur, excessive alcohol or drug consumption is usually involved. However, if you follow the general bathing rules and do not go into the water when the waves are high, you have little to fear.

climate

On the Fresh Spit there is a transitional climate between maritime and continental climates. The amount of precipitation is lower and the temperature fluctuations higher (warmer summers, colder winters) than on comparable coasts in Western Europe.
