Map of Galle

The old town of Galle is located on a peninsula, under the protection of which an important trading port was built in ancient times. It was the Portuguese who conquered the city in the 16th century and secured it with walls. In 1640 the Dutch managed to conquer Galle. They expanded the fortifications and Galle became the capital of Dutch Ceylon. In 1796, Galle came into the possession of the British, but they made Colombo their capital and Galle lost its importance. However, the old Dutch fort is still well preserved today, and the old town and fort have been part of the town since 1988 UNESCO world cultural heritage.
