Hambantota is a rural town in the south of Sri Lanka and is the capital of the district of the same name.

The city of Hambantota is located in a structurally weak region of the country. It doesn't have much to offer in terms of tourism. It was also badly devastated in the 2004 tsunami. As a result, several major projects were started to help improve the infrastructure. These include a cricket stadium near Sooriyawewa and a wind farm near Sippukulama.

On the coast of Hambantota, salt is still extracted in the traditional way, and seawater is fed into it 1 Lewaya and lets it evaporate there

By plane

The 1 Airport , Official name Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is located about 27 km north of the city in the village of Mattala. It was officially opened in January 2013. The airport was also designed for wide-body aircraft such as the A-380. At the moment (2013) there are only a few regular flight connections every day.

So far there is no rail connection, a route between Matara about Hambantota after Kataragama is under construction.
