stallions is a city of wild in Pernambuco.

Understand

Rising imposing like Rome on 7 hills - Antas, Columinho, Ipiranga, Magano, Mount Sinai, Quilombo and Triunfo -, stallions it is the largest climatic resort in the Brazilian Northeast, with 129,408 inhabitants (IBGE/2010). Located at about 850 m above sea level, on the Borborema Plateau, with an average temperature of 21ºC (minimum 4ºC, maximum 30ºC), it is nationally known for being the birthplace of former President Lula and the musician Dominguinhos, as well as for hosting the charming Winter Festival every July. The exuberance of its greenery and its flowers, spread in gardens and flowerbeds throughout the city, and contrasting with the hirsuteness of the Agreste of Pernambuco, earned it the affectionate names of "City of Flowers" and "Switzerland of Pernambuco".

To arrive

Garanhuns is 233 km from Recife, 98 km from Caruaru and 92 km from Arcoverde, all in Pernambuco, as well as 172 km from Maceió - AL, and 223 km from Paulo Afonso - BA. Despite having an airstrip, there are no regular flights connecting the city to other parts of the country, so the closest airports are Oscar Laranjeiras, in Caruaru, and Internacional do Recife (Guararapes/Gilberto Freyre). Once in Recife, regular bus transport is made from the TIP (Rodoviária, with a metro station of the same name) by the company Jotude, at the price of R$33 (semi-direct) and R$38 (direct), and with departures between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm (direct buses leaving Recife for Garanhuns, specifically, at 8:40 am, 1:40 pm, 6:00 pm). Those who choose to go by car should take the BR-232 via Caruaru to São Caetano (doubled section and, for the most part, of good quality) and then take the BR-423 (attention is needed with animals on the track, as well as potholes, even with regular maintenance, due to the high flow of trucks). In addition to BR-423, which also connects it to Paulo Afonso - BA, the city is crossed by BR-424, which connects it to Arcoverde, and by PE-177, which connects with the South Coast of Pernambuco and with Maceió - AL (in this case, turn right after Canhotinho and follow the BR-104).

circle

The best way to get around the wide, landscaped and flowery avenues of Garanhuns is on foot, although the city has a regular passenger transport service, with several bus lines. The tourist circuit, which is distributed in three main areas - Heliópolis, Centro and Guadalajara -, can easily be covered on foot, located within a radius of about 3 km. Exceptions: João Capão Castle and Cristo do Magano (access from the BR-423), Quilombo do Castainho (in the Rural Area of the Municipality, 6 km from the Center), Mãe Rainha Sanctuaries (in Colina do Triunfo) and Frexeiras (towards to São João), Pedra do Navio (towards Paranatama), the house where former President Lula was born (towards Caetés) and Circuito do Café (in Brejão).

There are so many tourist attractions in Garanhuns that the most prudent is to reserve a minimum of 2 days to get to know them. They are listed below according to their location:

HELIÓPOLIS ZONE

  • East Access and Monumental Portico - Opened in 2000, the East Access is one of the newest postcards of Garanhuns, next to the Mãe Rainha Sanctuary. Designed by the architect Carlindo Lopes, the entrance to the Municipality is an invitation to tourists, consisting of a wide road and urbanization project with viaducts, lighting, gardens, a Craft Center and, most importantly, the famous Monumental Portico with the name of Garanhuns and the date of its elevation to the status of a city, despite the incorrect use of the term "Founded in" (1879). "No other city in the state has such an inviting entrance," wrote Diario de Pernambuco after the inauguration.
  • Flower Clock - Postcard par excellence from Garanhuns, like its similes in Bern, Geneva and Zurich, Switzerland, and in Blumenau - SC, Cutiriba - PR and Petrópolis - RJ, it was built in 1981 in the beautiful Praça Tavares Correia, which it also houses a Tourist Information Centre. Measuring 4 m in diameter, it is the only one in the North/Northeast of Brazil to work with quartz crystal, that is, with high-tech components, so it only delays 1 minute per year.
  • Mansions and views from the top of Mount Sinai - Of all the 7 hills in Garanhuns, Mount Sinai is undoubtedly the most elegant, as it is part of the city's noble neighborhood, the residential and aristocratic Heliopolis. Going up Av. Rui Barbosa, in the stretch after the Clock in Flowers, is a unique visual experience. If the already enormous attraction of the stunning view that unfolds from the top was not enough, the route itself is bordered by the most beautiful mansions in the Agreste Meridional of Pernambuco, something like a movie! The neighborhood is so highly rated that real estate speculation has already reached it, and, in a city still with plenty of room to grow, spikes have already begun to rise, altering the once serene horizontality of Garanhuense.
  • Radio Newspaper and Residence of Duílio Tinoco - Garanhuns is usually considered one of the jewels of the art deco northeastern. The buildings of Rádio Jornal and the current residence of Duílio Tinoco, opposite the Hotel Tavares Correia, are, together with the Palácio Celso Galvão, the reason for this hype. The headquarters of Rádio, a pioneer in the interior of Pernambuco, consists of the model that was later reproduced in other buildings of the Group, such as Rádios de Caruaru, currently Shopping Difusora, Limoeiro and Pesqueira. The mansion, from 1936, is an example of faceted cubism, with the influence of the North American architect Frak Lloyd Wright being visible. Commissioned by the self-taught designer and builder João Francisco dos Santos, it rests between full and empty spaces, balanced by the tower crammed with staggered lines. The innovative design features aerodynamic curves and undulating planes that provide relaxation for tired eyes from endless cubes.
  • Lundgren House (Eucalyptus House) - The former residence of the Lundgren family, from Casas Pernambucanas, now owned by the Ferreira Costa Group, impresses more for the vastness of the land in which it is located, densely occupied by eucalyptus, than for the building itself. Parallel to the Winter Festival, the Art no Casarão Project takes place there, bringing together artisans from various regions of the state.
  • Dourado Euclides Park (of the Eucalyptus) - It is the main urban park in Garanhuns, concentrating several artistic and cultural centers during the Winter Festival. Formerly Horto dos Eucaliptos, the 8 ha area was converted into a Municipal Park and Zoo, the fifth oldest in the country, in the administration of Euclides Dourado, in the second half of the 1920s. It currently has a futsal and basketball court. , track cooperate, ramp of skateboard and playground, in addition to housing the Pombal and the Luís Jardim Municipal Library.
  • Church of Perpetual Help (Round Church) - In the wake of the modernist enthusiasm caused by the construction of Brasília (1960), the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro was built in Garanhuns, between 1957 and 1962, according to the architectural project of engineers Albert and Pierre Reithler. Due to its interesting format, it was nicknamed by the people of Garanhu the Round Church or the Couscous Church. Inside, there are panels with sacred images in Byzantine style painted on tiles by the renowned artist Cláudio Pastro.
  • St. Joseph's Seminary - Built in 1944 in exposed brick, the Seminary houses the seminarians of the Diocesan Congregation. Currently, it also functions as an inn, providing an interesting experience of contact with the monastic, rustic and material excesses-free lifestyle, at very reasonable prices.
  • light source - Located at Praça Souto Filho, the city's new gastronomic hub, it is one of the most famous postcards of Garanhu. It has flower beds and welcoming trees. In the late afternoon, the birds pass by the fountain and gather in the imperial palm trees. At night, the reflectors shine green light on the waters of the Fountain, providing a visual spectacle of simple beauty. Opposite the square is the centenary Colégio Presbyterian XV de Novembro.

  • St. Anthony's Cathedral - Dedicated to the so-called "matchmaker saint", patron saint of Garanhuns, the imposing diocesan cathedral with an eclectic façade, built in 1859, has its current appearance since 1872 and preserves the mortal remains of several diocesan bishops, including the martyr Dom Expedito, whose canonization process is being examined by the Vatican. The aforementioned priest was accused of living conjugal life with a relative and a maid and, suspended from his activities by the bishop, sought him out with the aim of murdering him. Mortally struck, Dom Expedito did not react and died in prayer, forgiving the aggressor. The building currently houses the Dom Expedito Museum, preserving the relics related to the life of the future saint and the tragic events of his death.
  • Celso Galvão Palace - Built in 1943, at the height of World War II, by the then Mayor Celso Galvão, the City Hall headquarters building is a masterpiece of style art deco, sporting the classic division of base, body and stepped crown. The interiors, in turn, feature a curved staircase and walls with the same parallel lines used in the façade.
  • Pérola Magazine and Ferreira Costa Center - In a city whose social and economic life still takes place in the Center, the Pérola and Ferreira Costa groups exercise the function of true shopping malls until the construction of the future Shopping Garanhuns, monopolizing local and regional commerce with its Magazine and Home Center, two huge department stores. Ferreira Costa is the oldest of them - and old boat at that! Inaugurated in 1884 as a small hardware and tools warehouse, it not only saw the city grow but grew with it, being, since the 50s, the most important commercial company in Garanhuns and, with its arrival in Recife in the 90s, the strongest brand in the construction materials sector in Pernambuco. The only Group capable of facing up to the Ferreira Costa "empire" is Pérola, which was born as an Optician in 1962 and, notable for its excellence in service, soon inaugurated the luxurious 9-story Magazine that dominated, majestic, the mountain landscape for decades, until the construction of new residential spikes in the neighborhood of Heliópolis.
  • Luís Jardim Cultural Space - The Space, on Av. Santo Antônio, the first street and currently the main commercial avenue of Garanhuns, is a tribute to the poet, writer, journalist and painter from Garanhuense Luís Jardim. The place, a kind of "March Zero" of the city, in which the primitive Chapel of Santo Antônio used to be frequented by Simoa Gomes, tells, however, the story of Garanhuns in a chronological series of ceramic panels in high relief authored by the plastic artist Armando Rocha, covering the time lapse that goes from the primitive occupation by the Garanhuns Indians, inhabitants of the "Campos dos Garanhuns", passing through the Quilombo dos Palmares and extending to the political emancipation of the Municipality.
  • SESC Summer Camp - One of the oldest and best equipped in the interior of Pernambuco, an excellent lodging option for commercial and non-commercial workers. Associated with SESC are important equipment in the city, such as the state-of-the-art Ronaldo White Art Gallery, with constant and excellent exhibitions, and the Chá Preto Restaurant.
  • Ruber van der Linden Park (Pau Pigeon) - Ecological reserve of tropical forest in an urban area with a recreational-educational character, the Park, still known by Garanhuenses as Pau Pombo, its original name, pays homage in its current name to the engineer, historian, journalist and poet Ruber van der Linden, who the organized when he was in charge of the Garanhuns Improvement Company. It is around its famous doorway in the shape of a Doric colonnade that most instrumental music shows take place during the Winter Festival.

GUADALAJARA ZONE

It includes the new Pátio de Eventos and the Alfredo Leite Cavalcanti Cultural Center, all properly delineated by majestic imperial palm trees. Its execution entailed the demolition of Vila Alpina, a former fixed scenographic village that was made mobile, but the full completion of the project bumped into the demolition of the former Bus Station, initially planned, but which was never carried out.
  • Dom Moura Square - Built in the second half of the 1920s, the square pays homage to the 1st bishop of Garanhuns and is famously known for the baroque balustrade that surrounds it, as well as the gazebo-shaped gazebo with a colonnade in the Doric style at its centre. It is also impossible not to try to stop the incessant singing of the cicadas that inhabit it.
  • Alfredo Leite Cavalcanti Cultural Center - The former Garanhuns Railway Station, inaugurated in 1887 as the end of the line that came from Recife and was destined for the São Francisco River, has housed the Centro Cultural de Garanhuns since 1979 (therefore, 8 years after the deactivation of the line and the station). . The building preserves the neoclassical influenced iglesque architecture, characteristic of the constructions of the great western. Its facade has 3 doors and 4 windows, all with trellises at the top and protected by a wrought-iron half grate. Inside, the City Memorial, with a rich documentary, iconographic and museographic collection on the history of the Land of Simoa Gomes; The Craftsman's House, where you can buy the most beautiful products, made in the land; and, in what was the old central module where the train passed, the charming Luiz Souto Dourado Theater, simulating a wagon, being the venue for theatrical performances during the Winter Festival. Lastly, on the first floor is the Bar O Vagão Petisqueria, traditional stronghold of bohemian Garanhuense, recently reopened and, pardon the pun, in full swing...
  • monastery of St. benedict - The building, dating from 1940, was made of exposed brick and recalls the Benedictine monasteries of the Middle Ages. It has a cloister, crypt and a modern chapel, with beautiful stained glass windows and an impressive panel that alludes to the apocalypse, all works by the aforementioned plastic artist Cláudio Pastro. The Monastery works as a training school for monks, manufactures hosts and an inn, as is also the case with the São José Seminary. There is also a shop where the Benedictines sell Syrians, icons, paintings and handcrafted liqueurs produced by them.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS

  • João Capão Castle - They say that every boy is a king, but the electrician João Ferreira, known as João Capão, was not content to exercise his majesty only when he was a child. He wanted to build a medieval castle and nearly 20 years ago he began to make his dream come true. It has already built two towers with medieval air, a hall, a garden with a curious fountain (a girl taking a bath, designed by a friend) and some drawings. And he still intends to build one or two more towers and an outer wall.
  • Christ of the Magano - In 1954, a 4 m high image of Jesus Christ crucified was carved by the artist Renato Pantaleão. It was intended for Alto do Magano, one of the city's 7 hills and the second highest place in Pernambuco, second only to Pico do Papagaio in Triunfo. Standing at an altitude of 1,030 meters above a lookout in the shape of a stone fortress, it is the tallest Christ in Brazil in relation to sea level. Worth the visit, especially for the beautiful view of the city and its surroundings that unfolds from the top of the hill.
  • Quilombo do Castainho - According to the historical records, when the Quilombo dos Palmares was destroyed in 1696, the Captaincy Government installed in Garanhuns, then Sesmaria do Ararobá, the Parish of Santo Antônio do Ararobá, future Santo Antônio dos Garanhuns. The city's history is, therefore, directly related to the quilombola phenomenon. There are several records of quilombos (Magano, Curica and Engana-Colomim in Garanhuns, for example) in the vicinity of Serra da Barriga, which constituted the República dos Palmares. Castainho is a black community reminiscent of the one led by the hero Zumbi. The area is explored by 183 families who live in simple houses, preserve cultural traditions, customs and collective work experience, producing subsistence foodstuffs. Black culture remains in the samba de coco and the Mãe Preta Festival, and during the Winter Festival the town hosts cultural workshops.
  • Queen Mother Shrine - Built in 2004, it is the newest tourist attraction in the city. It consists of one of the only three replicas of the Schöenstatt Shrine, in Germany, existing in the Brazilian Northeast (the other two are in Olinda - PE and Salvador - BA), out of a total of 21 existing in Brazil. Important center for pilgrimage and meditation.
  • Shrine of Frexeiras (in São João - PE) - It is said that the devotion to Santa Quitéria began there when an old image of the patron, brought by one of the pioneer settlers of the region, came to be considered miraculous by the locals, earning the veneration of those who were blessed by her , or of those who became aware of the increasing number of miracles achieved through his intercession. Currently, it is one of the most important centers of religious pilgrimage in the State, seeking to reconcile the sacred and the pagan, fueled by the syncretism of the pious people of the Northeast
  • ship stone (in Paranatama - PE) - On the way to Paranatama, there is an interesting granitic formation in the shape of a ship in which typical rock records of the Agreste Tradition were identified. Over the years, popular mysticism began to associate graphics with legends, such as the supposed existence of a treasure in the region, one of the famous "cylinders" in the hinterland, buried by the Dutch. For this reason, in fact, the stone was dynamited, and legend has it that, because of this nonsense, the "ship" lost part of its "prow".
  • Home where former President Lula was born (in Caetés - PE) - A very simple dwelling in rammed earth where the future President of Brazil lived the first 7 years of his life, before emigrating as a migrant to the Southeast. Partially restored during the filming of the feature "Lula, the son of Brazil", based on the homonymous work by Denise Paraná, the shack will soon be part of a more complete cultural circuit on the trajectory of the illustrious Garanhuense, which will also include a museum to be built in Garanhuns and already known as the Casa Lula Museum.
  • Coffee Circuit (in Brejão - PE) - In the first decades of the 20th century, Garanhuns, with its wonderful climate and ubiquitous lands, became not only the largest coffee producer in Pernambuco, but also, specialized in fine coffees, the place where it was produced the best coffee in Brazil and one of the best in the world, in the prosperous district of Santa Cruz de Brejão. Café du Brejon, which was listed on the world's main stock exchanges, was so good that it received a tribute during an International Congress on the subject, held in Paris (a commemorative plaque was posted in the city of light celebrating the feat) . Unfortunately, the policy of the Instituto Brasileiro do Café gradually dismantled the rubiaceae culture in the municipality, putting an end to the golden age of the past, but remnants of this period can still be found in the sumptuous mansions of rural properties belonging to the traditional Brazilian families, Figueira and Notaro, impeccably decorated in the old-fashioned way. An enchanting tour!
