George Town is a town located on the Isle of Penang in Malaysia.

Understand

Many civil and public buildings bear witness to the city's colonial past. Its counter activity gave it a meteoric expansion in the 19th century.e century. The heyday of trading had given way to a sleepy city. Since the 1980s, the semiconductor industry and tourism have awakened the city and its territory.

The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On a boat

  • From Langkawi, 2 boats per day, both around h in the morning. Around 5:30 p.m. in the direction Langkawi - Georgetown. 60 MYR/adult. a little bit less h path.

By train

Trains do not come directly to George Town but to Butterworth, right across from Penang Island where George Town is located. The ferry terminal connecting these two cities is located near the train station Butterworth and the price of the ferry is usually included in train tickets. The train is therefore a good alternative to other means of transport to reach this city.

  • Kuala Lumpur Logo indicating tariffs 34 MYR in second class. – Departure at h of Butterworth so you have to take the ferry from george town about an hour early. Arrive at 14 h at Kuala Lumpur
  • By Hat Yai (Thailand) – Two daily trains leave Hat Yai in the direction of Butterworth at h and to 14 h. These trains are often full the same day and it is therefore necessary to spend a night at Hat Yai.

By bus

  • From Kuala Lumpur, buses run throughout the day from George Town to Kuala Lumpur Puduraya Station. Approximately h path.
  • By Cameron Highlands, 2 to 3 buses per day in both directions. Approximately h path.
  • By Hat Yai (Thailand) Logo indicating tariffs Between 350 baht with luck and 650 baht through a reel. The standard price is around 450 THB.. – Minibuses leave Hat Yai almost every hour. Inquire at the agencies in front of Hat Yai station and compare prices which vary from single to double!

By car

Circulate

As in the rest of Malaysia, road traffic is governed by Anglo-Saxon rules (driving on the left) and rapid urbanization has not left the spotlight to pedestrians: small and congested sidewalks (when they exist), Unprotected crossroads difficult to cross, vehicles tumbling down from all sides and generally not from where we expect them with our right-hand rider reflexes ... On the outskirts of the city, the road network is well developed, the pavements of good quality ... and heavy traffic. For the pedestrian, getting around George Town is therefore already a journey in itself, a walkabout guaranteed all year round, foot bathing in the monsoon season. But the effort is rewarded: curiosities nestle at every corner of the lane and are available only to strollers. Good compromise for the brave: the rental of a two-wheeler which allows to widen the field of the discoveries and to drown in the rhythm of the "locals". More exotic: in town "rickshaws" await customers in front of the big hotels and tourist sites. A cliché perhaps but so romantic (price of the race to be negotiated before departure anyway, so that the honeymoon is not spoiled ...).
