The town Has yai(Thai: หาดใหญ่, hàad yai) located in Southern Thailand in the province Songkhla and is the fourth largest city in the country.

background

Hat Yai has grown from a small, insignificant village with a railway stop to the largest and most important city in southern Thailand since 1928. It is one of the few major cities in Thailand that is not a provincial capital, although it is much larger than the provincial capital Songkhla. A large part of the population is of Chinese origin, which shapes the culture, traditions and, in some cases, the architecture on site.

Hat Yai can be characterized as a lively trading and transport city, but it is not considered particularly beautiful.

The original city center consists of only three parallel streets near the train station, the Thanon Niphat-uthit 1, 2 and 3 - colloquially simple Sai Nueng, Song and Sam (“First”, “second” and “third street”). There are still a handful of old, brightly colored residential and commercial buildings belonging to Chinese traders from the early phase of the city in the characteristic Peranakan style (a mix of Chinese and Portuguese-colonial elements, as is also found in, for example Penang, Malacca or Phuket town finds). In most cases, however, they have been replaced by newer, multi-story commercial and office buildings. Due to the explosive growth of the city in the last few decades, it has expanded in all directions and now occupies a large area.

In the street

Hat Yai is on the well-developed national road No. 4, which leads from Bangkok to the border with Malaysia. From Bangkok it takes between 11½ and 12 hours by car, from Nakhon Si Thammarat just under three hours, from the border crossing Sadao / Bukit Kayu Hitam a good hour.

mobility

Despite its size and relatively large population, Hat Yai does not yet have a mass transportation system. Public transportation is songthaeos, metered taxis, tuk-tuks, and motorcycle taxis.

Songthaeos

Red-brown songthaeo of line 33

Songthaeos are converted pickups or vans with two benches on the loading area. They are used in Hat Yai as a regular means of transport. The lines are roughly described on the sides of the vehicle - but only in Thai script. The Songthaeos can be stopped at any time on the traveled route (if the traffic situation permits): from the outside by waving them over, and from the inside by pressing the stop button (or another passenger who is closest to the button , ask for it). As a rule, the price is to be paid to the passenger after getting out, who takes on the function of a conductor.

Important lines for travelers are:

  • Blue Songthaeo: Airport - Tesco Lotus 2 (Hat Yai Nai) - Minivan Station (Talat Kaset) - Junction at Kim Yong Market - Clock Tower - Roundabout with fountain - Big C Extra - Kho Hong T Junction (Branch to Municipal Park ) - Tesco Lotus 1 (opposite Prince of Songkla University) - Green Way Market - ASEAN Market - bus station or the same route back. Price 20-30 Baht depending on the route.
  • Red-brown Songthaeo No. 33 (Note: there are also red-brown Songthaeos with other numbers!): Bus station - Diana - Kim Yong market - Big C Extra - Municipal Park - Ko Me and back. Flat rate 10 baht. Only runs until around 6 p.m.
  • White Songthaeo: Kuan Lang - Kim Yong Market - Clock Tower - Communal Park and back. Flat rate 10 baht.

Taxis

In Hat Yai, too, there are now metered car taxis - a convenient and inexpensive means of transport to be taken to an individual destination. However, there is nowhere near as high a density of taxis as in Bangkok. So you can't just look for a taxi "if you're lucky", you have to order one.

Tuk tuk

Daihatsu microtransporter as a tuk-tuk in Hat Yai

Unlike in most Thai cities, tuk-tuks are not rickshaws pulled by mopeds, but usually Daihatsu micro-transporters with benches on the loading area (one could say: something between a tuk-tuk and a songthaeo). However, these do not follow a line, but can be used like taxis for individual transport to a specific destination. However, they do not have a taximeter; the price has to be negotiated with the driver. A reasonable price within the urban area should be in the range of 20-60 baht. The drivers rarely speak English. At the reception of your hotel you can have your destination written down in Thai, ask for a reliable driver and / or ask for help with price negotiations.

Motorcycle taxis

In principle, the same applies to motorcycle taxis as to tuk-tuks. Due to the sometimes getting used to driving style, they are only recommended for short distances and when other means of transport are not available. Be sure to insist on a hard hat!

Rental car

The traffic in Hat Yai itself is quite confusing, but a rental car is a sensible option for excursions in the area. A number of providers are represented at Hat Yai Airport (see above), there are also rental offices in the city center. This includes budget, Tipoa and numerous smaller, local companies.

Tourist Attractions

Municipal park

You can plan around half a day to visit the communal park and Khao Kho Hong with all its sights.

Statues in Hat Yai Municipal Park
Guanyin with her assistants Shancai and Longnü
  • 1  Municipal park (Suan Satharana Thesaban Nakhon Hat Yai; Has Yai Municipal Park), Thanon Kanchanawanit (about 6 km northeast of the city center on the road to Songkhla). Large public park with a pond where you can go canoeing.
The locals come here to walk or jog. There is also a statue of King Rama V (Chulalongkorn) here. Other attractions are a –15 ° C Ice rink (“Ice Dome”; open 9 am–9pm; admission THB 300, Thai citizens THB 200, children each half) with sculptures and an ice slide and a bird park. Numerous food stalls ensure the supply of physical well-being.
  • Right above the communal park, on the hill Khao Kho Hong, stands a 2 Temple for Guanyin (Thai: Kuan-im), a personification of the Mahayana Buddhist Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and at the same time, as the goddess of compassion, one of the most important deities in Chinese popular belief (More background on Wikipedia). You can either get there with one Cable car (daily 9 am to 8 pm; 200 THB, Thai 100 THB, children each half) or via a staircase with around 1000 steps. The temple is accessed through a gate in the shape of a dragon's mouth. Except for a 20 meter high one Guanyin statue made of white jade (with their assistants, the boy Shancai and the girl Longnü), there are other Guanyin statues (in different incarnations), statues of the twelve Chinese signs of the zodiac; a brightly painted, fat "laughing Buddha" (Budai) in the Chinese style; a statue of the Jade Emperor (Yu Di), the Daoist sky god; as well as a somewhat Disney-esque looking statue of Guan Gong, a real general from the time of the Three Kingdoms (around 200 AD), who was transfigured into the god of war and martial arts in Chinese folk beliefs due to his outstanding military skills, as well as other deities. This shows quite well the eclectic beliefs of the large Chinese community in Hat Yai.
  • A little further up the hill (again either by cable car or via the stairs) is a huge golden Buddha statue - 3 Phra Phutthamongkon Maharat - which has become a symbol of Hat Yai. From here you have an excellent view. That too is only a few meters away planetarium (Hat Yai Deep Sky Observatory; open daily 9 am–8pm; admission 20 THB).
  • Also on this hill is a 4 Brahma shrine with a four-faced statue of the Hindu god (similar to the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok). In front of the shrine is a statue of the three-headed elephant Erawan.

Work

security

The emergency law in parts of Songkhla province and thus also the travel warning issued by the Federal Foreign Office is concerned Not the city of Hat Yai and its surroundings, but only the districts of Chana and Thepha, which are more than 50 km further east. However, there were also bombings in Hat Yai in 2006 and 2014 (the latter fortunately without any fatalities), which are probably related to the separatist conflict.
