Johor Bahru (alsoJohor Baharu, Johor Baru or Johore Bahru - but mostly just briefly JB) is the capital of the Malaysian state Johor. The city itself will only be on the plan for a few travelers. However, it is strategically very favorable. From here you can take a short bus ride to popular destinations in Johor, such as Kota Tinggi and Desaru.

background

It all started with a small fishing village called Tanjung Puteri, which was founded here in 1855. 11 years later it got its new name from the later Sultan Temenggong Abu Bakar Johor Bahru. As the seat of the sultan and through some waves of immigration, the place continued to grow. Another economic boom began in the 1960s. It's hard to believe with its current size, but the city status was only officially given in 1994. Johor Bahru now has 1.4 million inhabitants, including Singapore there are 7 million. The Indonesia – Malaysia – Singapore Growth Triangle (SIJORI Growth Triangle) which was established as an economic region in 1994 and includes Johor Bahru, Singapore and Riau Islands now has 8 million people.

Singapore: With Singapore on the opposite side, there is permanent, rapid border traffic. Opposite the new train station, not far from the embankment in the direction of Singapore, is the new, large building of the immigration authority - the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ for short). The paths through the building are signposted and there are plenty of counters. The buses to Singapore end one floor below. Several companies operate from different destinations within Singapore. For those visiting the city center and the sights, the buses from Queen Street are recommended. The MRT station "Bugis" (BW12) is not far from the bus terminal. After a short drive to the dam, you have to get off again. All luggage must be taken with you, as the rest of the journey is done with the same bus company, but not the same vehicle. The necessary formalities are completed on the first floor of the immigration office. In front of the counters on the right-hand side there are tables with the entry forms that have to be filled out beforehand. After the border formalities, it's back to the buses. Every bus company has a queue that is marked accordingly on the ground. Here you line up again to take the next bus over the dam to Johor Bahru.

  • Ipoh: The average travel time is 9 hours.
    • Star Coach Ekspres. Departure: daily: 3:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. # 65 Jalan Leong Sin Nam (RM 48.00).

By car

From Singapore
  • The Causeway connects Malaysia and Singapore and starts right in the city center at the new CIQ next to the train station. During rush hour and on certain days (Friday evening in the direction of Malaysia and Sunday evening in the direction of Singapore), however, there may be slight traffic jams.
  • The Second link connects western Singapore to the mainland and has less traffic. Those who are traveling with their own car are better served here. However, the dam is located a little west of the city.

The crossing costs a fee at both border posts. In Singapore there are the systems CashCard and Car pass. Malaysia uses the Touch'n Go card. Rental cars or foreign vehicles may cost extra.

The city is located at the south end of the toll North-South Expressway. The Skudai, Kempas, Jalan Pasir Gudang and Johor Bahru exits lead into the urban area.

mobility

Map of Johor Bahru

Local public transport in Johor Bahru is quite limited. One or the other sight within the city center can be reached on foot. For all other ways you should therefore take a taxi.

taxi

The taxi is the best way to cover longer distances in the city. However, rip-offs are often lurking here too. The list of excuses as to why the taximeter is not working and switched on is long. You should definitely insist on using the taximeter. When you arrive at the train station, the taxi drivers are waiting and want to negotiate the price. You shouldn't get into that. It can also be helpful to find your destination on a map. The taxi drivers like to take a detour, even if the distances are short. So it is good when the taxi driver knows that his customer has an idea of the route and its length. A little tip applies to travelers who have deliberately chosen a hotel in the city center not far from the Causeway. Those who arrive at the train station only need to leave the building to the west and are in the city center. A “city tour” by taxi is therefore sometimes not necessary at all.

The starting price of the taximeter is RM 3.00. This includes the first two kilometers. Further costs are then 10 Sen for 115 meters. Between midnight and 6 a.m., a 50% surcharge is due. A third passenger and luggage also cost extra (RM 1.00). There is a coupon system for standard routes from JB Sentral to known places. The coupons are sold at appropriate counters. The prices are higher than those of the normal taximeter, but the annoying negotiating about the use of the taximeter may be omitted. The taxi rank is under the bridge between the train station and the Immigration Office (east exit of the train station). When purchasing the coupon for the route to the AEON Tebrau City Shopping Center, RM 21.50 is due, to the Larkin bus station RM 10.90 and to the airport RM 45.00.

Rental car

Johor Bahru and the surrounding area can also be explored by rental car. There are several options for renting your own car in the city.
