- Otak-otak(鲤鱼 包): Anyone who goes to a restaurant in Johor Bahru or Muar is sure to get a plate on the table. On it there are skewers with an ominous content wrapped in leaves. Otak-otak is a popular snack in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and Johor is really known for this specialty. It consists of a meat cake made of fish, usually mackerel, wrapped in a banana leaf. During preparation, fish paste is mixed with a whole range of ingredients such as garlic, egg, shallots and a number of spices. The result is these delicious little warm snacks.
