Gifu(Japanese: 岐阜) is a japanese City about 40 km north of Nagoya and at the same time the prefecture capital of the prefecture of the same name Gifu in the region Chūbu on Honshu. The city was badly affected by a huge earthquake in 1891. The bombings during the Second World War also destroyed a lot.

Tourist Attractions

  • Gifu Castle. The reconstruction of Gifu Castle from the post-war period can be accessed by cable car from Gifupark.
  • Shoho-ji Temple. Inside the white-orange-colored Shoho-ji temple there is a daibutsu (great buda) made of paper mache, almost 14 meters high. It weighs around a ton and consists of prayers put on paper; it was completed in 1747 after 38 years of construction.
  • Fireworks (Hanabi) (on the Nagara River). At the end of July / beginning of August there are two big fireworks on the Nagara River opposite the castle on two Saturdays. The events attract over a hundred thousand visitors who settle on the dykes of the river.
  • 1  Tanigumi Temple (North of Gifu, approx. 23 km from the train station). Local, somewhat hidden temple with a nice atmosphere.

  • 1  Cormorant fishing, Minatomachi, Gifu-shi. Cormorant fishing has been practiced on the Nagara River for more than 1,300 years. The city of Gifu is making efforts to have cormorant fishing recognized as a World Heritage Site. The fisherman lets his cormorants into the water from the boat on ropes so that they catch fish. The cormorants have rings around their necks so that they cannot gobble the fish all the way down. To attract the fish, a wood fire is lit in a metal basket on the boat. This gives the whole thing a special atmosphere. The tourists watch the spectacle from separate boats.Open: daily, mid-May to mid-October.

  • 1  Hotel Park, 397-2 Minato-machi, Gifu City (The hotel is located on the Nagara River at the foot of the Gifu Castle, approx. 100 m from the cormorant fishermen's offshoot.). The hotel has an onsen (hot bath) on top of the hotel.

There are a number of business hotels around Gifu train station.
