Geographical notes
The county now borders the Brecknockshire to the north, col Monmouthshire to the east, with the Bristol Channel to the south and col Carmarthenshire and the bay of Carmarthen West.
The northern area of the region is mountainous with deep valleys. Its highest point is at Craig-y-llyn (600 meters).
Among the most important rivers are: the Taff, the Ely, the Ogmore, the Neath, the Dulais, the Tawe, the Rhymney (which forms the border with Monmouthshire) and the Loughor (which forms the border with Carmarthenshire).
Background
In the Middle Ages it had been the area of the kingdom or principality of Morgannwg, founded by King Morgan. After Gwent, it was the second Welsh area to fall to the Normans and was often the scene of clashes and battles between Welsh and conquistadors.
