gokyo is a small village in the Solukhumbu district in the Nepal, is located on the eastern shore of Lake Dudh Pokhari. It mainly consists of several small hotels. Gokyo is situated at an elevation of 4,750 meters and is considered to be one of the highest villages in Nepal and in the world.

Understand

Climate

Gokyo is not permanently inhabited year-round, as it is primarily a place of lodges for hikers and mountaineers, and of summer grazing for herds. In winter the village is practically uninhabited due to the intense cold and the trails that give access are covered with a lot of snow.

To arrive

  • To the south, on the trail that leads to Namche Bazaar, is the village of Machhermo (4410m). It is the main trail used.
  • From the east via Dzongla passing through the "Cho La Pass" (5420).
  • From the west via Lungden passing the "Renjo La Pass" (5345m).

Look

From here you can take wonderful walks along the series of lakes and enjoy fantastic views (in particular at sunset) of Everest, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu.

Knife

Climb Mount Gokyo Ri at 5,360 meters in the morning to enjoy the view of the mountains as it is usually cloudier in the afternoon.

There are no other places except the few hotels where you can eat.

sleep

There are 7 or 8 small hotels, if you can call them hotels. They usually have tiny rooms with only beds as furniture and shared bathrooms.

Buy

There are no shops in the village, but the hotels stock up on necessities such as batteries, bandages, biscuits etc - but remember that prices increase with altitude so expect to pay more than at Namche Bazaar
