Goree is an island belonging to the territory of the Senegalese capital Dakar belongs. The island has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In 1617 the island was colonized by the Dutch who bought it from a local chef for an apple and an egg. For a while this island was in the possession of the West India Company, who transferred it to the former South Holland island. goree named and built two fortresses there: Fort Nassau on the Hill and Fort Orange. In 1663 the island was conquered by the English but the following year Michiel de Ruyter recaptured it again. It then fell into French hands in 1677 and became English again in 1758. Later, the French came back and added it to their colony of Senegal, until the country's independence in 1960.
The island has a special character due to the influences of the various rulers (Portuguese, Dutch, English and French). The brightly colored houses give it a Mediterranean hue, the architecture also has Arabic features. 1200 people live on the island of which 800 Muslims and 400 Christians, there is both a mosque and a church.
