Dakar is the capital of Senegal. It is located on the Atlantic coast on the Cape Verde Peninsula and is also the westernmost city of the continental Africa.
The climate of Dakar is determined by the city's location on the tip of a peninsula that protrudes into the sea for around 30 km. Compared to the pronounced dry season from December to May, there is a warm, humid rainy season from June to November, known as «hivernage».

Dakar officially has 4 arondissements and 19 districts the so-called communes d'arrondissement.
The real historical heart of the city is the “commune d'arrondissement Dakar-Plateau”. This is also where the business and government district is located.

Getting there is easy as Dakar is one of the most important West African cities.
By plane
From Europe, Air France (Paris-CDG), TAP Air Portugal (Lisbon), Air Sénégal (code sharing: Paris-Orly, Marseille, Milan), Iberia (Madrid, Las Palmas), SN Brussels (Brussels) Dakar fly directly to Dakar several times a week . The airport has the usual international services, a pharmacy and a post office. Cigarette prices in duty free for international brands are twice the street price in Dakar!Domestic flights to Ziguinchor offer 2018 Air Sénégal and Transair. The latter also serves the capitals of the neighboring states to the south.
By train
In July 2016, a double-track railway line from Dakar to Diamniadio (36 km) and on to the Blaise Diagne International Airport (19 km) advertised. The start of operations was planned for the end of 2018, when it is actually unclear.

There is a ferry to Ziguinchor.
By bus
There is the possibility for about 15 € by minibus from Nouakchott to drive in Mauritania over the Diama dam to Dakar. A person will be drawn for free on departure. Since you are on the way Diawling National Park crosses, tourists are charged a fee of 200 Ouguiya (€ 5) shortly before leaving the country. The road is in poor condition on the Mauritanian side (2019). The journey takes a full day.

The fastest and usually also the easiest way is to take a taxi. However, their technical condition is more bad than good. Negotiating the fare in advance goes without saying. At night, double the fare is usually charged as during the day for the same tour. It is advisable to always pay appropriately or to only bring small change with you.

- 1 Monument de la Renaissance Africaine.

Practical advice
In the city center you have the streets in a checkerboard pattern Rue numbered, odd numbers running from north-west to south-east, even numbers are perpendicular to them. An "X" in the address stands for "at the intersection."
