How to orient yourself
Neighborhoods
- Red Hook it is an old industrial area that is undergoing a period of renewal. Although difficult to reach by subway trains, it is served by the F and G lines by stopping at Smith-9th Street or by taxi or by taking the B61 bus. Founded in 1636 by the Dutch, it has gone through several phases and is now somehow divided between those who consider it the quiet part of the city and those who would rather make it the center of commerce again (Queen of Kings County Commerce). If you are looking for somewhere off the beaten track and off the beaten track, Red Hook is the place for you. Many artists consider it their home, so don't be surprised to see creative sculptures, galleries, or gardens amidst the dilapidated houses or buildings. However, due to the many public houses inhabited by poor people who occupy a large part of the neighborhood, it is good to take precautions and be very careful. the crime rate is still high and robberies against property and people are a very serious problem in the community.
- Carroll Gardens - According to historians, the name dates back to the 1960s and real estate agents love to push its boundaries. Includes part of Smith Street and nearby areas. In the 1950s and earlier this area was known as Red Hook, and still today many call it Red Hook and South Brooklyn. Smith Street has several new restaurants, but there are still plenty of old Italian-American places to discover.

Even though New York is a fairly safe city, Red Hook is notorious for its high crime rate. In general, to the north of the Gowanus Expressway, Gowanus and Carroll Gardens are quiet areas, while to the south, in Red Hook, it is the area to be very careful, especially near the Red Hook Houses in the north-east of Red Hook, just south of the Gowanus Expressway.
