The place extends - coming from Landquart - behind the narrow gorge of the 1 Klus, on the right bank of the Landquart on a cone of alluvial land piled up by the Schmittnerbach in the widening valley floor. West of the Schmittnerbach begins the municipality of Seewis.

Grüsch belonged in the 4th century. to the rule of the Von the Lords of Vaz, came to the Toggenburg family in 1344 and later to the Habsburgs. In the 15th century the place became part of the Ten Court Association.

In 1561 the community joined the Reformation, until then Grüsch had been subordinate to the Church of St. Johann in Schiers. In the 16th - 18th century were built in the village by the families Finer, von Ott and Salis-Soglio patrician houses in the center.

The agricultural village experienced a decline as a tourist destination with the construction of the Grüsch - Danusa mountain railway, the bypass road, which triggered a construction boom and the establishment of industry in the valley floor.
