The Baie des Tortues at Bourail is, in contrast to many other beaches in the region, still natural.

3  Bourail. Second largest town on the island, but only 4800 inhabitants. The continuous highway is both the city center and the business center. An agricultural show is held on the weekend of August 15th. About ten kilometers outside is a war cemetery of New Zealand fallen soldiers. The offshore reef ensures good surfing conditions, especially near the mouth of the River Néra.

3  Roche Percée Island (On the coast to the Baie des Tortues (4 km), then on to the Baie des Amoureux). The unusual rock formations can be reached via a hiking trail la Bonhomme. Mangrove swamps dominate the coast, while livestock is mainly used on the inland plains. The RT1 runs right through until you reach the border with the northern province after 50 km in Poya.
Shortly before Nandai leads the Route du Col des Roussettes (RT3) across the island to Houaïlou (60 km).

West Coast

Nickel has been mined in the area since 1880 in the form of garnierite, this mineral is named after the discoverer Jules Garnier. Right on the provincial border is 7  Poya. Nickel is mined nearby. To the north is the Massif de Boulinda at 1330 m.

Pouembout. A village in the "bush" that emerged from the star colony established in 1883. Only the houses remain from this period Château Grimigni (Renovated in 2006, cultural center) and Le Pigeonnier. A three-hour coastal hike leads from the beach of Pindaï to the port of Népoui, which is opposite the Grimaud Island.

The region north of Hienghène is ideal for multi-day hikes. St. Joseph

Vao

Grotte de la Reine Hortense mostly simply as Grotte d'Oumagni designated.

Bélep Islands

The small archipelago is around sixty kilometers from Poum, within the barrier reef, northwest of Grande Terre. The islands Art, Pott and Dau Ac are inhabited. Around 900 people live here, almost exclusively Kanaks, who are divided into eight tribes. The largest village with almost 800 people is Waala on the west coast of the 11 Ile Art (whose name is in the native language Dau Ar). To the east is the settlement of Bwéo. For diving on the east coast to Bouloupari, on the west coast Poindimié (reef), a little further north the rugged coast at Hienghène is fascinating.
