Longest wave transmitter SAQ
The long-wave transmitter with the callsign SAQ was put into operation on December 1, 1924, initially on the frequency 16.13 kHz, kilohertz, (18,600 m). On July 2, 1925, he became the King of Sweden Gustav V. officially opened. The transmitter was used for intercontinental Morse code communication with the radio station Radio Central in long Island, USA.
The transmitter is a machine transmitter, i.e. the electromagnetic vibrations are generated with the help of an electrical generator. It is known as a so-called Alexanderson alternator with which one was able to generate frequencies up to 100 kHz. The local transmitter was part of a set of 20 similar transmitters, those of General Electric were produced. 17 of these transmitters were used between 1918 and 1924. Most of the transmitters were switched off after the Second World War. The local transmitter was used to communicate with the submarine fleet until 1960.
The transmitter system consists of the 200 kW generator, which is operated at 17.2 kHz (17,442 m). This generator was designed for up to 40 kHz. The signal was sent to a so-called Alexanderson antenna which consists of six 127 m high towers. Twelve 2.2 km long copper wires, which are not radiators themselves, are stretched between the towers. The antenna also includes extension coils and vertical wires that emit the transmission signal. The extension coils, towers and roof wires form the resonance circuit and must be tuned to resonance.
Most of these facilities were scrapped or destroyed. The Grimeton system is the only one in the world that is still functional today. It was therefore declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 2, 2004. It is regularly put into operation on special occasions such as Alexanderson Day and Christmas. At the turn of the millennium, the Swedish king left Carl XVI. Gustaf send a New Year's message. There are also unannounced test broadcasts. The official broadcasts are always followed by several hundred radio enthusiasts worldwide. The effort to receive is relatively low. A small antenna with a receiving preamplifier on the sound card of a computer is sufficient.
During the summer, at certain times of the year 1 Longest wave transmitter SAQ can be visited. Alexanderson Day is the last Sunday in June or the first Sunday in July, which is the closest to July 2, the anniversary of the official opening. The day and the antenna are named after the Swedish radio engineer Ernst Frederick Werner Alexanderson (1878–1975).
