Groede - Groede

Groede is a place in Dutch Flanders in the south of the province Zealand, which is part of the municipality Lock. The oldest mention is from the early 12th century. There were still saltwaters then. The name Groede refers to 'grode', silted and vegetated land outside the dikes. There has only been a village center since the 14th century.

Info

Groede was one of the first villages to be reclaimed in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. During the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), Groede was flooded for a while and the current Grote Kerk suffered a lot of damage. Jacob Cats (1577-1660) reclaimed 12 polders around Groede. He was a poet, lawyer and statesman and came from a wealthy Zeeland family. He has earned a lot of money with the reclamation by leasing the new land. The wealthy family had their own pew in the Grote Kerk, which is still there.

Groede is a church ring village, which is visible from the market. It is a ring around the Grote Kerk. Many buildings on the market are national monuments. The oldest buildings date from after the re-diking in 1612. Market 20 has the decorative anchors '1614'.

Groede was spared during the 2nd World War. Groede was a Red Cross village so it was not bombed. As a result, the tower has also remained standing. At the time, a large red cross was painted on it, so that the village could be recognized from the air. The high tower is unique in the area and can be seen from afar.
