Guadalupe is a historical place with valuable sights. The 14th century monastery of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe became the UNESCO world cultural heritage explained. According to legend, a shepherd found after the Reconquista (Recapture) in the 14th century a wooden panel with a Madonna who survived six hundred years of Moorish rule unscathed. Out of gratitude, a Jeronimos monastery was built in 1340. The king took over the patronage which brought influence and wealth to the monastery. It developed into a center of medicine in Spain. Three hospitals and one of the largest libraries have been preserved. The first scientific autopsy was carried out here in 1402. An old hospital now houses the Parador de Guadalupe, which has a beautiful courtyard with orange trees. In 1808 troops from Napoleón I looted Guadalupe. In the following century, Franciscan monks restored the complex. Today it attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world who want to see the Black Madonna.
