Understand

To arrive

  • Due to the massive immigration of Brazilians looking for work in the neighboring territory across the border with the Amapá, visa is required for Brazilians. In practice, there are controversies as to how this process actually takes place. Crossing by land, there is no type of border control. Anyway, to cross legally, a passport and a yellow fever vaccination certificate are required. Police officers along the path between Saint Georges (at the border) and cayenne will invariably approach all cars; they are extremely thick and almost all corrupt. Back in Brazil, the tourist must look for the immigration post in the city of Oiapoque himself, if he goes back across the river. If traveling by plane, get a visa first.

By airplane

In Bethlehem, through the Air Caribbean and, also from Macapa, through the TAF.

Of boat

In Oiapoque, at the Amapá, in a 15-minute crossing on the Oiapoque river, you reach French territory.

By car/bus

Land connections with the Brazil depend on the completion of a bridge connecting BR-156, in Oiapoque, to French Guiana. However, it is possible to cross by ferry to Saint-Georges (R$200 per car) and follow the paved road to the capital, passing by Regina. There are reports that the police on the French side are very tough and harsh, even suggesting bribes to allow the trip to continue.
