The name Gulpen comes from the small river Gulp that emerges in Belgium. The community of Gulpen-Wittem has 14,466 inhabitants (Gulpen: 4250) and spreads over an area of ​​73.35 km². Gulpen-Wittem is one of four municipalities in the Netherlandsthat both at Belgium and border on Germany. There are four villages in the municipality that have protected village buildings. There are a total of 289 so-called imperial monuments.

In Epen you can find the yellow calamine violet, which is unusual for the Netherlands and only occurs on soils containing heavy metals in the vicinity of Aachen.
